Been some fun waves around! I got the opportunity to shoot down at boodji the other day with Tim Jones and standup fellas Creed Mctaggart and Jerome Forrest, was so sick..slabbing close to the beach and so round.. I hadnt got my ass down there for a few years due to uni commitments so I was pretty amped to be pulling into some beachbreak pits.

If you haven't heard of Micah by now then your missing out, residing in Wailua on the north shore of Oahu Micah is intimidating in the water.. not only coz he is a massive Hawaiian but he smashes the crap out of sections with a hell of a lot of power.. Big things will come from this fella.. you wait.

-where do you think your at with your riding right now?

As I look back a year ago at my riding style, I can tell that my wave knowledge has grown. Now, I take the time in the morning before I paddle out to read where I have to be in the line up. As for my riding, I've learned to examine my stance to figure out where and when to throw tail, airs, or floaters so that my maneuvers are explosive. My focus has always been performing tricks, but this year I'm working on perfecting my barrel riding. My passion and hunger is what drives me. I'm hungry like a fat boy on Thanksgiving!

-There are so many shots of you floating around right now! looks like it has been a good season.. how do you rate it so far?

Waves have been off the wall these past few months. I've been putting in over time with my riding and the photographers I work with but, mostly with my close friend Maurice. If I could rate this season out of 10, it would be a 9.5. It's been one of my best seasons yet and we still have a lot more waves to come, but without the crowd.

-give us a rundown of what gear your using, boards fins etc

Custom Board, Blunt cut Fins, and Power Balance. Don't leave home without it.

-there looks like there is going to be a solid dk tour this year.. are you going to do any of it? dk sessions?

First of all, it's about time they did a DK world tour. Second, hell yeah I'm going to enter the tour as much as I can. It should be crip. Lastly, to have a DK tour will bring style to the world.

-what wave do you want to surf most?

-and lastly when the bloody hell are you going to come stay at my house and surf the margaret river region?

This year killah! As long as you have an extra wetsuit for me. Im not used to the cold, Ima freeze balls! I've been waiting to ride da river and score some big barrels with you brah. It should be good times.

Im going to do a series of little interviews of other dropkneers, quiz em on relevant stuff and hopefully show you some shots that havent been seen but still keeping them short and sweet. Here is the first, Matt lackey.

Q- Im sure we have all heard by now the news thats come out in the media.. whats been going on apart from that ? how are the waves and what are you focussing on right now.

ML- Waves have been really good around home, alot of good days at Dbah, really good banks, right now the wct is in town, so its a nightmare out in the water.....Otherwise ive been shooting as much as possible for my movie, didnt go to hawaii this season, was itching to go but the crowds over there tend to get to me.....

Q- have you got specific trips planned for this year or do you like that kinda hush hush?

ML- Nothing is ever hush hush, haha, i have so many trips planned,so if just one of them actually turns into a reality im amped, alot of the time its so hard to get everyone together for it to actually happen....but im always thinking of places to go...weather they happen though is a differnt story! ahahahaa

Q- how far away is the Vid. and who specifically are you looking to get featured alongside yourself?

ML-Im looking at getting the vid out around the end of this year, as for people featuring,im just looking for good riding, i only want to showcase the best shit, ive been working alot with Dylan Lee, he been killing it, really good style, got a mental Roach section, even got some feasty clips that are getting a run for sure, and im planning on doing a few trips with mason to work on his section, oh and jake sharp i love the way he surfs.....but im going to be really picky on what gets a run, just the best stuff....

Q- I saw earlier in the year that you were changing up your shape, looks like it was getting straighter down through the tail, can you give crew an idea of how its going to be different and how thats altered the riding experience/how the board responds differently from your current one?

ML-To be honest im so confused on what to ride!!! hahahahaa.....for me the materails play a huge part in the board, i always rode Dow boards, but the new dow cores these day are horrible, so im having to ride poly pro, so ive been trying to ajust to that.....im just rode a board right now that had the perfect shape, but somthing was up with it, and it was just riding shit (well thats my excuse!!)...so im always looking for that perfect board....

Q- wanna go dropknee shippies with me? reckon its even remoteley possible?

ML-Shit!!!! no comment...., you dont know until your in the water there, seeing it and feeling it, i think that step at shippys would get you everytime, but fark it would make a mental shot!!!!.....i might stick to dbah on that one feasty!!!! hhahahahahaa

Q- your approach to the fitness side of your surfing has really upped the ante.. what do you do to train and how often?

- ive been getting right into my running and just a good healthy diet, i do it for my general fitness really, not specifically for surfing, but obviously it helps....

Got the board into the water when i got back to Bali.. headed out Keramas.. which was fun but not really doing it.. a bit slow but the setup is sooo good! The blue board i have went sick straight away.. the one good section i got i was able to see where the shape was at didn't disappoint but didn't get shot (once again)

so im pumped! now to test the others and see what changes I made with Dan and Mez work better

Im over at the Mez Factory right now.. having the opportunity to work on my shape with Dan Sivess to change a few things, which has been a great experience.. the setup here is crazy and everything coming out of here is amazing.. not hard to see why they are so much in demand. Super cool fellas too and im so amped I had the opportunity to come over here. even got to go to the hugest mall 8 storeys.. place was loose.. womans heaven Here is a few shots and the process of one of my boards being crafted by Dan..

Ive been holding off posting on here, maybe because I wanted to pay tribute correctly to Wade.. and didnt really know how to..with his funeral today and such a massive turnout for both that and the paddle out in his honour its clear to see how many people respected him and and how much he bought good times to everyone who knew him.. Ill cherish a session halfway through this year that I spent out at wedge after everyone had gone in. The tide had turned and the waves were starting to get good when it had been kinda average most of the morning, all of a sudden Wade turned up, whether it was local knowledge or what, he was there right when the waves were starting to pump.. I was almost too buggered to keep surfing but I hadn't seen wade in a while so I just couldn't go in.. his infectious smile and pure amp to be cruising in the ocean it made for such a fun session, so many ramps and even tho it wasn't massive just being able to share fun pumping waves with wade smashing shit left right and centre will stay with me forever..

The whale that gurney killed

So a while ago now I met up with Chris Gurney Tom Jennings and Brett Mitchell for a quick surf down at city beach.. I was keen to shoot but gurney wasn't his same old self.. about half an hour in he pulled the pin on the session, got back in his Peugeot and bailed.. we were a little perplexed.. I went off to work and Brett stayed and surfed.. after a few hours he noticed some commotion to the south and wandered down with his camera to check out what was going on.. only to find out that a whale had been murdered!! and Chris no where to be seen..coincidence?? i think not.. Chris has always had a deep hatred for whales after an incident off rottnest a few years ago.. he doesnt like to talk about it too much but get him drunk and it comes spilling out.. much like the blood that spilled out of this whale after Chris hacked it and left it to die..ive been threatened by Chris if these photos ever came out but im not scared anymore.. the world has to know.. here are a few photos Brett took.. nice left in the background too..

I really enjoy getting over to the east coast for the dropknee sessions because it allows sessions to go down where dropkneers are all hanging in one place having fun and feeding off each other. Jake Sharp is one of those crew who always supports the DKS tour and abbbssoolutley kills it.. might sound like im sucking up here.. like im cupping his balls in my hands but im not, its straight up how it is. The technical side to his riding it pretty much right up with the very top of the dropknee food chain and it gets me amped to surf when i see his speed and control and how fast he transitions from move to move. Id say the only downside is that he is pretty much locked into life in coffs harbour which doesnt see him out into the public eye and maybe out on trips as much as he could be. but thats neither here nor there..check these photos out. Ill bang more stuff of him up as it comes. Feast out.

Got up Early this morning to shoot Fishyfinger with Alex Turoy this morning and it was bloody 2 degrees. Then hung down and met up with Mike Honeybone Alex Halsey, Tom Rigby, Nic Barclay, Jake Stone, Chris Gurney and Tom Jennings.. i wonder if i can drop any other names.. Chris White was also lurking in the dunes working the filming angles.. there you go.. had a good section of the beach to fang around in.. did a bit of driving and got angry when I blew it for other people by towing them shit.. Ill get there tho im still a rookie..

Most people who know bodyboarding and dropknee would have heard of Mason Rose, and possibly of his breakdancing talents which have lead him into filming editing and producing four Seven shadows breakdance dvds which are known world wide in the bboy circles. But you guys may know know of the amazing creative side to mase. He films and designs some amazing shit then backs it up with craazy talent in the editing studio. I managed to see some of this first hand when I cruised at his house and he was editing a music film clip up for Micheal Franti and Spearhead who paid him to follow them round on their aussie tour. Check this clip out it will provide a little bit of an insight in to the creative talent that exists within Mr Rose. i dig it.

When we got to port I got the opportunity to meet and hang with matt brockie who has some serious talent behind the lense..especially in the water.. this is the day after the contest south of port at this crazy right bank.. despite a brutal hangover and having a busted shoulder from a mishap at the presentations (which im sure most people have seen on the dks vimeo..and which is pretty funny..) i managed to get out into a few slabs.. was sick fun just getting thrashed around and even though i couldnt paddle well with my bung arm i was fine pushing up to get up so i got into a few. hopefully a few shots of everyone from this day get a run coz they looked pretty good when i saw them on the camera after.. Dropknee Sessions Port Maquarie

The main event of the DKS 2009 was run on the 8th of August out a breakwall Port Maquarie.. After some super fun waves during the week I was happy that id had a fun trip and managed to top it off by taking out the title. I am super stoked to win as everyone was ripping throughout the whole trip and i havent ever really done well in a big contest. I just felt comfortable on my elit boards and everything just came together when the waves popped up in front of me...super stoked and also happy that I could dedicate winning to the memory of my father and Ryan Mccurdy who both passed away last year.. I had both of them there with me throughout the day.

So im sitting in forster right now on the east coast after some super fun waves at a left wedge this morning. was hoping to be able to do an update a day but with lack of coverage out on the coast im just gonna do a bulk upload. The first contest was run and won by Jake Sharpe who ripped ever heat to bits the whole day. small waves for the comp bu they were rideable and clean. Paul roach is over here for the contest and i was fortunate enough to be able surf with in the expression session with the man himself, lackey Grant Molony, Matt Klimowicz(sorry klimo if thats spelt wrong). Stoked to of been able to participate in that then cruised went and had the pressos and a few beers followed. here are some pics from yesterday and this morning. Feast.

Hooked up with Mike Honeybone yesterday and went and towed around some perth beachbreaks with him Ben Horrocks and Josh Garner. Those guys were all launching. We met up down the beach with Lachlan Palmos who was kind enough to send these frame grabs. On the way back honeybone and myself stopped in at hillaries which was perfectly clean tucked away from the northerly wind that had ended the previous tow session. there were little knee high wedges and no one out so we fanged around in there for a while. tiny but so much fun.

101 hours

k i know its 2 posts back to back but here is one of the things thats been dominating my time lately. I worked it out that of the last 4 and a half days which total 101 hours, I got to sleep for 15 of them. including a 36 hours straight and 24 hour straight punishments busting my ass to get work done to the deadline. and thats not even leaving stuff to the last minute either.

Massive props to Mike Dobson and another mate Riyaz De Souza for their help over the last few weeks. Check that link for a project that Riyaz has designed. Looks sick. Anyways the panels above are part of the Design submission for the Architecture course im doing. there was a model that goes with it but i dont have a camera at the moment so ill show it later if it can. you should be able to click on the images if you wanna see them bigger.

I been cruising with these fellas a bit when there has been waves. Dobbo is a sick dropkneer thats been around for a while and a graduate architect who has been helping me out with my work alot.

Today marks 1 year since my father passed away from cancer.. fittingly there is a storm that just hit that coincides with the hectic thunderstorm that dad chose to go out in the middle of on this same day last year. As i stepped outside earlier on tonight i immediatley saw a flash of lightning and it bought a smile to my face. I miss you dad, and im proud that I was your son.

I received a comment from west of claws and teeth fame yesterday infering that Fresh Feast was all over.. that id lost the passion, Truth is ive been having my ass fed to me on a plate at uni so i havent exactly had too much spare time . been doing my best to use that time to get in the water, mandurah wedge being only an hour away has been a massive saviour. definatley one of my new favourite waves now. Its such a tricky wave to surf but so much fun. With only a few weeks left of uni for the semester im amping to have time to focus on surfing. Went over to cobbles/big rock for a surf check with West this morning
a typical carload of (im ashamed to say bodyboarders) rocked up and walked past us. Waves were fairly small. 1-2 foot (photo from west's phone)
And even though big rock will be one of the spots that attracts the most swell on the whole coast down here, In one of the dudes infinite wisdom he walked past us telling his mates "yeah lets go up to injidup or rocky point. theres gonna be heaps more waves up there" we had to have a laugh. And after they did the shittest burnout out of the carpark and up the track in their shit nissan 4wd (which fucks the track even more than it already is) I hope they had fun driving up to total and utter flatness.

Took/borrowed my brothers landrover this evening and went to gallows again. was pretty fun! amped to get in the water after spending 2 days driving up to perth and back with zoe for uni orientation. didnt get any evidence tho so here is a photo of the right thats next to Gas going crazy last friday.. oh and a photo of a bee humping the shit out of a flower.

As I left my camera in Alex's car and alot of the sessions of late have not been able to be banged on the world wide web just yet I dont have too much fresh stuff to be able to put up. Got some downtime today so ill rustle up some things if I can.

A few of the last surfs have been out a wave thats not the easiest wave to dropknee. which casued me a fair bit of frustration In not surfing too well and blowing good waves when i finally got them. Working in perth has its drawbacks, Ive found having time out of the water hard on my surfing, Not feeling set on my board and losing alot of timing in the first few surfs i have after having the 1-2 week enforced breaks. I am fairly hard on myself when I ruin waves when I know that if I was fresh and on top of my game I could be doing some good stuff. But the last 2 surfs I feel like I let go of alot of the pressure I was placing on myself especially when there are ppl fimling and shooting photos. I was more than happy to just chuck myself over the falls or just muck around and enjoyed just being in the ocean and took myself back to the reason I enjoy being in the ocean so much and that is just to have fun! It worked a little too that when i finally got the wave I was after and was alot more relaxed and happy to be riding.

Hopefully we might venture and do some tows this afternoon. Alot has been said about how tows are way overdone these days but for me I havent done alot so its definaley fun and extremely good for your surfing to have to make split second decisions going at speed. Im still gettn the hand of things so hopefully ill do something good soon and not drag too much water up with me so im visible in the frame. Here are a few of Alex Turoys photos from the last time.

This wave is super fun, but doesnt really compare to alot of the waves in the
area, Its a super fun wedgey little left and when most joints are blown out southerly this joint is clean.

Doesnt hold big swell but for an afternoon surf in summer it's always fun. got plenty of good memories as a little grommet riding in the back of 4wd utes to this place from the bay.

I have been doing a fair bit of travelling in between home here at gracetown and perth lately, which im happy to do because i regard down here as the best place on earth, working thurs to sun at EBB and weather permitting bolting down here and surfing as much as possible.

Apart from working with the Claws and Teeth fella's ive also been filming with another motivated young human by the name of nic barclay, he is a fairly art driven kid and has a video on the way looking to be released sometime around autumn. It should be cool to see what he can come up with as its going to be his first vid. here are a few frames of the last 2 sessions ive had in my time off from work. supplied by nic.
